Hi guys, Suzanne asked me to do a little tutorial for a crafty creation. I know these are really simple, but sometimes it is helpful to me to actually see the steps rather than coming up with them myself, so I hope you feel the same way.
I use these little felt flowers for all kinds of things, including barrettes, door sign decorations, note cards and magnets. These are super easy to make.
I like wool felt because of the way it feels and the color choices. I get my felt from Woolfeltcentral.com and Magiccabin.com.
If you are going to make a flower that will be washed, use polyester felt, or you will end with a little felted ball of fluff.
Use 3 strands of embroidery thread to outline a design. I usually free-hand draw a few flowers and then use a fabric marking pen to trace around the design before I stitch it. The outline will fade in about an hour.
After there are several designs completed on one piece of fabric, use Steam-a-Seam2 to adhere a fabric back to the felt. This is the same stuff I use for the t-shirt appliqués.
Carefully cut around each design with a small, sharp scissors. I use the excess scraps to make the centers of the flowers, cutting out and stitching a small circle to the center of each flower.
Use E6000 glue to adhere small, extra strong magnets to the back of each flower. I buy button magnets in bulk packages at Michael's. These pair super cute with fabric covered buttons, also glued onto magnets. Similar to those Mi’Chelle made for Suzanne and those Shim + Sons sells on Etsy.
I am also totally loving these tiny tin trays as teeny tiny magnet boards.
